Tennessee 5th Grade Curriculum

Our English Language Arts curriculum is designed to cultivate a love of reading and writing while developing essential literacy skills. Students will explore a wide array of genres, including fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and biographies. They'll engage in critical analysis of texts by examining characters, settings, and plot structures, fostering their ability to summarize key ideas and make personal connections.

Our mathematics curriculum encourages students to develop robust problem-solving capabilities and a deep understanding of mathematical concepts. Students will explore number operations, reinforcing their skills in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of whole numbers, as well as comparing and ordering fractions and decimals.

Geometry topics will introduce students to the classification of shapes, understanding angles, and solving problems related to perimeter and area. With a focus on measurement and data, students will learn to measure lengths, weights, and capacities while representing data through tables and graphs. They will grasp key statistical concepts such as mean, median, and mode.

Our science curriculum fosters inquiry and exploration. In Physical Science, students will investigate the properties of matter and the principles of energy and motion. Life Science offers a deep dive into ecosystems, plant and animal biology, and heredity, encouraging students to connect with the living world.

Earth and Space Science will capture students' imaginations as they explore weather patterns, climate, and the Earth's resources, providing a foundation for understanding our planet's systems. Each unit is designed to promote curiosity and critical thinking through hands-on experiments and real-world applications.

In Social Studies, students will embark on a historical journey from Native American civilizations through key events such as colonization, the American Revolution, and the Civil War. They will learn about the geography of the United States, utilizing maps and globes to enhance their spatial understanding and human-environment interaction.

A focus on civics and government will empower students by teaching them about the foundations of American democracy, the responsibilities of citizenship, and the importance of community engagement. This knowledge equips students to become informed and active participants in their society.
