Creating Nature-Inspired Sculptures

View Lesson

In this 3rd-grade art lesson, students will explore the world of 3D sculpture by creating their own nature-inspired pieces using air-dry clay and various natural materials. The lesson begins with a discussion on what sculptures are, highlighting the differences between 2D and 3D art forms. After this introduction, students will brainstorm and sketch their ideas before beginning the hands-on creation process. They will utilize their sketches to guide their sculpting, incorporating textures and shapes inspired by nature. As the lesson concludes, students will participate in a “show and tell,” sharing their sculptures with the class and discussing their inspirations. Through this engaging activity, students will develop their creativity, fine motor skills, and appreciation for sculpture as an art form, culminating in a follow-up opportunity for a mini art exhibition.
